I've never personally known anyone who visited a slum for fun. Truly hope this is not a common thing. I've also never demanded anyone speak English in any country I've visited, but I have heard similar stories and it's really unfortunate.

As for the food, trying local cuisine is just a must. What's the point of even traveling without savoring such things!

Respecting people in their own country is something every traveler should do!
