Yikes. This would be such a headache, and rather scary. It's easy to get absent-minded while traveling what with so much going on so it could definitely happen. I've found in general that US embassies are fairly unhelpful when it comes to anything they don't consider routine, despite the websites telling us how much they can help in emergencies. Been there done that!
